Why do we need a Preventing Possession Initiative? Print E-mail

In 2008 we noticed a huge increase in demand for our specialist housing debt service.  More and more people were contacting our advice line worried about the possibility of losing their homes due to mortgage or rent arrears. We knew that something had to be done to protect the homes of those families affected by the economic downturn. So, in February 2009 we launched the Preventing Possession Initiative.

The project provides free advice and representation at court to homeowners and tenants and is engaged in preventative policy work with housing providers and lenders .  Read more about the background to the initiative in the PPI briefing paper and be sure to leave a comment to let us know how we're doing!

Here is a link to a news announcement that an England-wide team has been set up to tackle the problem of loan sharking. To read more see: http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/12920184
At least in England they know the extent to which loan sharking exists and they now have a national organisation to tackle it. Similar teams exist in Wales in Scotland. In NI we don't have information on loan sharking though it unquestionably exists and nor do we have any organisation to tackle it. It's about time we did.

There are fewer options in Northern Ireland for people who have a poor or no credit rating so the use of these high cost credit facilities must be extensive. It would be a good starting point to know the scale of the problem including the use of illegal money lenders locally.

This has to be one of the most significant intiatives taken in the housing field. We know the importance of having a good quality home. To lose such a home unnecessarily can have a devastating effect on a family in terms of relationships, health, children's education, etc. Furthermore the cost of then finding alternative accommodation and payment of benefits all points to the need to try to address debt issues in such a way that homes are not repossessed and families are enabled to stay together.
