At present around 12% of homes in Northern Ireland are rented from a private landlord. This form of accommodation offers flexibility and choice for families, students, migrant workers and professionals who cannot afford to buy a home and cannot access social rented property due to the high levels of demand.
However tenants who live in this form of accommodation can experience a range of difficulties, for instance failure to carry out repairs, unfair tenancy agreements and illegal eviction or with holding of deposits. In addition there are high levels of disrepair in the private rented sector in Northern Ireland.
This four day, accredited course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive advice and assistance to tenants renting from a private landlord.
In particular this course will include:
• Status of occupiers • Tenancy types & equality issues • Obligations of landlords and tenants • Repairing obligations of both parties • Fitness, rent control & functions of the Rent Officer • Houses of multiple occupations • Finance Issues • Housing benefit & local housing allowance • Security of tenure & ending tenancy
Who Should Attend?
This course will prove essential for anyone who is providing advice to tenants in the private rented sector, including solicitors, environmental health officers, advisers, estate & management agents and landlords.
