Housing issues Homelessness in Northern Ireland remains a problem. Housing Rights Service is committed to improving the situation for people who are homeless. We are working to protect homeless people's rights and to develop long term solutions to stop homelessness happening in the first place. Housing debt is escalating in Northern Ireland and demand for our service is higher than ever. Financial crisis is an important trigger to homelessness and reaching a stable situation is vital in protecting against the risk of homelessness. Renting from a private landlord offers flexibility and choice for a range of people. Increasingly in today's market more people who cant afford to buy, or get social rented housing, are turning to privately renting. Unfortunately some tenants experience problems with their landlords. The availability of social housing has been decreasing over the years. This is partly due to the impact of tenants buying their homes and to the low level of new housing being built. There are 40000 households on the waiting list for social housing. |
