the housing situation
The vast majority of properties are owner occupied (73% of occupied stock). The remainder consists of Northern Ireland Housing Executive dwellings (14%), housing association dwellings (3%) and private rented dwellings (10%).
Northern Ireland has one regional housing authority, the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. It has responsibility for a wide range of areas including:
- homelessness
- improving housing conditions,
- developing programmes to meet housing need, and
- promoting energy efficiency
- managing its housing stock.
The Housing Executive also operates a Housing Selection Scheme for the allocation of social housing, along with over 40 Registered Housing Associations.
