housingadviceni logowww.housingadviceNI.org is a website providing free, reliable and practical information to the public on housing and homelessness issues.

It has been produced by Housing Rights Service (the leading provider of specialist housing advice in Northern Ireland) in partnership with Shelter (the national campaign for homeless people). It is funded by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.

The site gives online advice and is backed by a free telephone helpline and email advice service.

Project aims

The main aim is to promote access to housing advice in Northern Ireland, particularly amongst those who do not traditionally use advice services, including young people and people living in rural communities. By providing practical information, and appropriate signposting where necessary, the site aims to prevent homelessness and address issues of housing need by helping people to find answers to their housing problems at an early stage.

What does the site contain?

housingadviceNI examines the range of housing problems in Northern Ireland from the perspective of the public rather than housing professionals. The site includes detailed sections on:

  • Homelessness
  • Rights when renting
  • Getting a Housing Executive House
  • Finding a place to live
  • Debt advice
  • Paying for a home
  • Your neighbourhood
  • Families & sharing
  • Intimidation
  • Eviction
  • Repossession
  • Repairs
  • Grants
  • Complaints & legal action
  • Rates

The site also contains sections specifically targeting the housing issues experienced by Young People and by Migrant Workers in Northern Ireland. The Migrant Workers section is available in 6 languages.

One of the best used parts of the site is the Advice Service Directory , which is an extensive database signposting users to local agencies which can assist people experiencing problems.

Another useful part of the site contains self-help materials available for download such as checklists and sample letters to help people deal with their housing problem themselves.

This project was originally set up in partnership with Shelter in coordination with their advice websites for England and Scotland and is funded by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive
