Housing benefit is a means tested benefit available to persons on a low income and administered by the Housing Executive for all tenants.  The aim of this course is to provide participants witha good knowledge of the housing benefit system, including rules relating to eligibility;contrived tenancies and overpayments.

  • Rules and qualifying conditions for Housing Benefit
  • Eligibility criteria
  • Contrived tenancies
  • New rules on the application of the new Local Housing Allowance for tenants in the private rented sector
  • Circumstances in which payments for "Two Homes" can be made
  • Overpayments and the recovery of benefit
  • Appeals process

Who should attend?

This course will be essential for welfare rights/housing advisers, hostel workers and others providing advice to clients claiming housing benefit.

This course will not cover how to calculate Housing Benefit

Training for Trainers

This two day interactive course is designed to develop the skills and knowledge of those involved in the design and delivery of training.

During the course, participants will have the opportunity to prepare and deliver a short training presentation and receive feedback on this.

  • Training methods and resources
  • Preparation and delivery of training
  • Group management skills
  • Evaluation of training
