Bedroom Tax

Ever since the financial crash and recession in 2008 the UK Government has attempted to reduce the amount of public expenditure on the Housing Benefit bill. A key element of the Government’s reform of the social security system has been the introduction of the Social Sector Size Criteria, or the ‘bedroom tax’ as it is more commonly known. Although the bedroom tax is in place in Northern Ireland; those most affected by it have had their financial loss mitigated by way of supplementary payments.

This Professional Resource looks at:
  • the background to the bedroom tax
  • the existing mitigations
  • avoiding the bedroom tax
  • legal challenges to the  bedroom tax, including the most up-to-date significant case law
This Professional Resource is essential reading for housing advisers, social security advisers and social housing providers.
