When everyone has a home

028 9024 5640: Housing & Debt Helpline for Northern Ireland

4 hours

It's arguable that COVID-19 has impacted on private renters more than it has on homeowners and social tenants. Private renters see restrictions on the amount of benefits they can get to help with rent and have far fewer protections from eviction than their counterparts in social housing. While homeowners have been able to apply for deferrals of mortgage payments, private tenants must continue paying rent and have received no government assistance towards rent holidays or reductions.

This course looks at the experience of private renters in Northern Ireland during the pandemic and at the changes that have been made to try to protect this group.

By the end of this course, you will be able to

  • accurately advise private tenants on their protection from eviction
  • signpost renters to additional support if they are struggling to pay rent
  • identify sources of financial support for rent in advance and deposit payments
  • discuss recent proposals for change and improvement in the private rented sector
