Call for Evidence opens on Department’s Housing Supply Strategy  

The Communities Minister has called for evidence to inform a new housing supply strategy. 

Minister Hargey describes the strategy as an essential part of the Department’s “ambitious and radical shake-up of housing”.  

Responding to the call for evidence 

You can respond to the call for evidence online. You must respond by 16 July 2021.  

Further public consultation on a draft strategy will follow.  

You can sign up for online consultation workshops on the draft strategy this summer.  

Proposed objectives of new housing supply strategy 

The housing supply strategy will aim to reduce housing stress and homelessness. 

The strategy's proposed objectives are to 

  • Increase housing supply and affordable options across all tenures to meet demand; 
  • Reduce housing stress and homelessness and improve housing solutions for the most vulnerable; 
  • Improve housing quality 
  • Ensure housing options that contribute to inclusive communities and places 
  • Support the transition to carbon neutrality 

Ensuring good quality, affordable, sustainable homes appropriate to household's needs 

The proposed vision for the strategy is: 

"Every household has access to a good quality, affordable and sustainable home that is appropriate for its needs. 

The online survey asks for evidence, data and opinions on topics, including:  

  • The merits of a ‘whole system’ approach to housing  
  • The strategy’s proposed 15-year timeframe  
  • Suggested objectives for the strategy  
  • Potential barriers to delivering the strategy’s objectives  
  • Definitions of the terms ‘good quality', ‘sustainable’ and ‘affordable’ in the context of housing
