Volunteers Week: Volunteering at Housing Rights

All volunteers play an important role in helping Housing Rights improve lives by tackling homelessness and housing problems. For Volunteers Week 2017, we asked a few of our volunteers why they decided to volunteer with Housing Rights.

Shalima: Helpline Advice Assistant Volunteer for Housing Rights

“I commenced my journey at the Housing Rights as I wanted to apply the legal knowledge gained while studying at Queens in a workplace environment. As a future lawyer, I wanted to develop my skills to understand clients and their individual needs. Housing Rights has assisted me to understand the struggles clients are facing in their daily lives. Furthermore, I have seen first-hand how the reality of practising law differs from learning the law.

Volunteering is the best way to give back to the community. At Housing Rights, this has been an enormously rewarding experience for me; from the delegated responsibilities to the excellent end-to-end support by the Helpline team to get the best results on every call. My involvement as a helpline advice assistant has helped me improve my future employability to a next level while working as a team to prevent homelessness. Additionally, I have acquired practical and transferable skills, interacted people from all walks of life and importantly build confidence

Lastly, I have enjoyed every minute of it and would always encourage others to get involved with Housing Rights as I could not have asked for a better experience!”

Matthew: Policy volunteer for Housing Rights

“I had previously been working at a food bank, which really opened my eyes to the effects of poverty and homelessness.

Ive a degree in Social Policy, so volunteering with Housing Rights gave me the chance to expand my skills and knowledge, and help them work to prevent homelessness.”

Lesley: Helpline Advice Assistant Volunteer for Housing Rights

“I took a career break from practicing law to look after my kids. I’m now ready to go back to work.

Volunteering on the Housing Rights helpline is giving me the chance to get up to speed with recent changes in housing law, and I get to help people in housing difficulty”
