Family Resources Survey shows increase in those renting privately

More than 20% of Northern Ireland households now live in private rented accommodation, according to the Northern Ireland Family Resources Survey.  Ten years ago, this figure stood at 10%.

The report provides a summary of the information collected from the Northern Ireland Family Resources Survey during the period April 2013 to the end of March 2014, in which 1,965 households were interviewed.

One of the areas the report looks at is tenure types for each household. This section contains information on households whose accommodation is owned outright i.e. households which have paid off any mortgage or loan used to purchase the property, householders buying with the help of a mortgage and tenants renting in the social or private rented sector.

This years results show that 21% of households are private renters, 14% are social renters, 29% have a mortgage and 39% own outright.
