Latest poverty figures released

The Department for Social Development has just published its 2012-2013 NI Poverty Bulletin. This is the third annual poverty bulletin from their Analytical Services Unit in DSD to be published.

Key findings include:

•    The average (median) household income in Northern Ireland was £395 per week before housing costs and £358 after housing costs.  

•    The overall level of relative poverty in Northern Ireland has decreased between 2011-2012 and 2012-2013.  Approximately one fifth of the population is in relative poverty in any given year.

•    In 2012-2013 there were approximately 89,000 children (20%) in relative poverty.

•    In 2012-2013 approximately 58,000 pensioners (20%) were in relative poverty.
