Landlord Jason talks through his experience with the Housing Rights Mediation Service.

What was the problem you faced with your private tenancy?

“I had been renting the property to my tenant for eight years and the rent was always on time.  But I became worried when the tenant started missing payments and fell into arrears.  The tenant then paid me a large sum of money to cover the outstanding rent, and told me that she wanted a family member to take over the tenancy.  I asked the tenant to make arrangements with my letting agent but became very concerned when I did not hear back for over a week.

“I confronted the tenant and the situation escalated.  The tenant said she would pay what was owed to me but that she was leaving.”

How did the Housing Mediation Service help solve your problem?

A short time later I was contacted by Laura Coulter from the Housing Rights Mediation Service asking if I would be prepared to participate in mediation which I agreed to immediately. My only request was that I would receive rent on a regular basis, and I also wanted to be fair to my tenant.

The process was very quick and simple and took place over the phone.  When Laura called, she had already been dealing with my tenant and simply had to put the proposal to me.  They requested that the tenant’s son and daughter take over the tenancy which I agreed to.

Would you recommend the Housing Mediation Service to others?

I enjoyed the experience with the Housing Rights Mediation Service as relations were so straightforward for me and the sole focus was on the situation at hand. I was 100% happy with the outcome.
