Heating and lighting our homes is an everyday necessity. However, Consumer Council research shows that for one third of consumers it is the area of household expenditure they worry about most.

Consumers can cut down on their energy bills by shopping around for the best deal possible and switching suppliers to make savings. The Consumer Council has produced a range of resources to help consumers save on their home heating oil, natural gas and electricity bills.

The last few months have seen parts of Northern Ireland deluged with rain.  An emergency meeting of Assembly ministers was called yesterday to work out an adequate response to assist those affected by floodwaters.  A total flooding fund of £1.3 million has been made available from Westminister to deal with flooding, but departments have not yet decided how this will be allocated.

Although our office is in Belfast, our services are available to people throughout Northern Ireland.  We also work with 24 agencies across NI to provide guidance, support and assistance on housing cases as part of our Community Housing Advice Partnership.

The Housing Executive and the regional Health and Social Care Trusts have agreed on good practice guidance for assisting homeless young people.  The guidance, signed off earlier this year, is an attempt to ensure that young people in crisis receive the assistance they need as quickly as possible.  Agencies who provide advice to young people should ensure that they know which agency is responsible for assisting young people in crisis.
